Introduction
Roberta McCutcheon has been teaching history for thirty years and has received several awards as a high school teacher including the DAR New York City Chapter American History Teacher of the Year Award and the Delta Kappa Gamma Golden Apple Award in recognition of outstanding excellence in education. She is currently teaching at Trevor Day School in New York City and is Chair of the Upper School History Department. Her focus is American history.


Fred Freitas has been teaching for thirty-seven years, the last thirty-three of which have been at Gates Intermediate School, in Scituate, MA. He has served as a Trustee of the Scituate Historical Society and has co-authored three books on local history.



Lesson Plan 1: High School



This lesson will fulfill the following NCHS National Standards for History:

Era 4: Standards 3A and 3B: The extension, restriction, and reorganization of political democracy after 1800.

Era 5: Standard 1A: Civil War and Reconstruction - The Causes of the Civil War.


Lesson Plan 2: Middle School



This lesson will fulfill the following NCHS National Standards for History:

Era 3: Standard 2: The impact of the American Revolution on politics, the economy, and society

Era 3: Standard 3: The institutions and practices of government created during the revolution and how they were revised between 1787 and 1815 to create the foundation of the American political system based on the United States Constitution.
