Abraham Lincoln Entering Richmond, April 3, 1865

On Sunday, April 2, 1865, Abraham Lincoln received word that Confederate defenses at Richmond had been breached and Lee's Army was in retreat. The capture of the Confederate capital had been a goal of the Union army since the beginning of the war and finally, after four long years of battle, the city fell. This engraving shows Lincoln with his son Tad on a visit to Richmond. African American men, women, and children rejoice around him.
