The "Nigger" in the Woodpile
(Lithograph, 1860. Courtesy of the Library of Congress)
This cartoon is a racist parody of Republican efforts to play down the anti-slavery
plank of the 1860 Republican platform. It depicts Horace
Greeley, editor of the New York Tribune, trying
to convince a voter that Lincoln has no connection with
the Abolition party, while the voter points to the black
man peering out from inside of a tent of rails.
