The "Nigger" in the Woodpile

This cartoon is a racist parody of Republican efforts to play down the anti-slavery plank of the 1860 Republican platform. It depicts Horace Greeley, editor of the New York Tribune, trying to convince a voter that Lincoln has no connection with the Abolition party, while the voter points to the black man peering out from inside of a tent of rails.
