During times of war, art often serves as propaganda for those who seek to promote a cause or diminish the support of their enemy. During Lincoln’s presidency, slavery was the defining issue of the time.

Slideshows
Republicans, abolitionists, free African Americans and emancipated slaves rejoiced over Lincoln’s decision to include slavery in the war effort. Southerners, Proponents of slavery, in the North and South, felt that slavery should be kept out of the war. The following illustrations and political cartoons give a sample of what the public was seeing in the press during the election of 1860, the Civil War, and the eventual end of slavery.
